Hola, somos: Benedicte Desrus, fotógrafa documental; Ilallalí Hernández, editora; Celia Gómez Ramos, cronista, y Yadhira Bravo, psicoanalista. Somos un equipo de trabajo desarrollando un libro que generará donativos para la Casa Xochiquetzal; y esta pieza editorial bilingüe (español e inglés) justamente hablará sobre ella.

Abrir puertas y dejar de ser fantasmas, libro sobre el albergue para trabajadoras sexuales de la tercera edad en la ciudad de México.

La Casa Xochiquetzal es un proyecto único en el mundo, que da hogar a aquellas mujeres que se dedicaron al trabajo sexual y, al llegar a la vejez, vivían en situación de calle. Para ellas, desde hace seis años, esta Casa (asentada en el Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México) representa un cobijo, comida, actividades y la posibilidad de vivir tranquilas. Es un esfuerzo del gobierno y la sociedad civil.

Normalmente se piensa en cómo comienzan las cosas, pero poco se conoce de la vida real de estas mujeres indomables, que se van dando cuenta de que los años pasan, y que parece tuvieran inscrito en el cuerpo una fecha de caducidad, a tal punto de no poder contar con un techo para vivir en su vejez. Este libro, además de narrar el día a día de las mujeres que habitan esta Casa ⎯a través del lenguaje fotográfico y literario⎯, mostrará su ingenio, sus afectos, la garra, las travesuras, en pocas palabras, el corazón de cada una de ellas. Ofreceremos una mirada humanizada al interior y exterior de esta Casa y de estas mujeres.

Nuestro proyecto, y su conocimiento, contribuirá a que la Casa reciba donativos y, también, a que se replique en otras latitudes, porque en cualquier sociedad resulta fundamental cuidar como propios a niños y a viejos. Pretendemos crear una sociedad interesada en la reflexión, y a partir de este libro y la intervención en esta comunidad, buscamos compartir el testimonio de estas mujeres, enalteciendo su dignidad y su condición de sobrevivientes. No se trata de un compendio o de un estudio social ni de un libro que se encuentre a la venta en el sentido tradicional, sino de una herramienta que incentive el donativo para entregar fondos a la Casa Xochiquetzal y sus habitantes.

Tu apoyo es fundamental para llevar a buen término la primera parte del proyecto, que consiste en concluir la documentación y el diseño. Gracias a ti podremos acercar posibilidades a la comunidad, pues si bien tienen techo y comida, requieren medicamentos, atención médica y todo aquello necesario para una vejez digna. Si no logramos conseguir este primer donativo, el proyecto seguirá, pero tomará más tiempo que la voz de todas ellas sea escuchada. Sabemos que es posible abrir la puerta de la reflexión y dejar que estas mujeres dejen de ser invisibles, fantasmas…

The video you have received is part of our joint effort to develop a bilingual (Spanish and English) photographic album and chronicle of the women’s shelter known as Casa Xochiquetzal. In addition to describing this special shelter, home to elderly sex workers in Mexico City, the volume entitled Abrir puertas y dejar de ser fantasmas/Opening Doors, No Longer Shadows will also serve as a fund-raising tool.

Casa Xochiquetzal is a project like no other in the world, offering a home to women who worked as prostitutes and, as they grew older, found themselves living on the streets. For six years, the house (in Mexico City’s ancient downtown) has represented shelter, food, recreation, learning, and most of all, a chance at a stable, tranquil life. Casa Xochiquetzal is a joint public-private effort. It’s normal to “start at the beginning,” but very little is known about these indomitable women’s real lives. They saw the years pass, as if expiration dates were inscribed on their bodies; in old age they discovered they had no place to call home.

Besides describing residents’ day-to-day lives in vivid verbal and photographic languages, Abrir puertas y dejar de ser fantasmas/Opening Doors, No Longer Shadows will portray their streetwise intelligence, their affections, their tenacity, their mischief…in short, each woman’s heart—a human vision of life both inside and out of Casa Xochiquetzal, of what you see, and of what resides deep inside the women who live there. Increased awareness of our project will help Casa Xochiquetzal solicit donations and will resonate in other parts of the world, since caring for children and the elderly is a fundamental concern of every known society. Through the book, we seek to build a community of interest that reflects on and involves itself with the Xochiquetzal community; we seek to share these women’s testimonies as a means of celebrating their dignity and their status as survivors. It is neither a compendium nor a sociological study nor even a book designed be sold in traditional settings; rather, it is a tool that moves donors to support the house and its residents.

Please join us. Your participation—even more than your donation—is a covenant with the women of Casa Xochiquetzal. We invite you to get to know these extraordinary women’s lives even better, and learn from the lessons they can teach us all. Additionally, your support is critical to the success of the project’s first phase: documentation and design. Thanks to you, we bring new possibilities to the community. For now its women count on food and shelter, buy they also need medicines, healthcare and everything else a dignified old age requires. We are determined to continue the project even if we cannot meet this preliminary goal, and despite the additional time it will take for all these women’s voices to be heard. We truly believe we can open the door to greater reflection, and that these women can emerge from the shadows, invisible ghosts no more.
